Murder mystery party mistakes to avoid

Published on 26 October 2026

A successful murder mystery party depends on a few things: a good story, motivated guests, and a host who avoids some classic traps. Here are the mistakes we see most often, and how to stay clear of them.

1. Forgetting the outfits

You can absolutely play the same evening, but remember to send the invitations before your guests arrive: they tell everyone what their character wears. Even improvised from the wardrobe, an outfit changes the atmosphere. More in our article on invitations.

2. Choosing a game that does not fit your group

A kit designed for 12 played with 6 makes for a wobbly case. Check that the game clearly states your number of players and its essential roles. Read how many players you need.

3. Reading the solution "just to check"

It is the host's temptation. Resist: once you have read the solution, you are no longer really playing, and it is hard not to steer the others without meaning to. Print it separately and seal it in an envelope straight away.

4. Handing out all the clues at once

The case files are designed to arrive act by act. Giving everything at the start breaks the rhythm: the case is solved too fast, or players drown in information. Follow the host's book.

5. Leaving a player on the sidelines

A shy guest can drift away if nobody questions them. The host can gently step in: "and you, where were you at midnight?". The questioning cards help too: they push everyone to ask questions of everyone.

6. Forgetting to eat

Three hours of investigation is long on an empty stomach. Plan a simple meal or a buffet that does not need serving: you need to stay available to run the game.

7. Confusing lying with cheating

Players may lie to hide their secrets; that is the game. But only the killer may lie about the crime itself, and nobody shows their file. Remind everyone of these rules at the start; it avoids plenty of arguments.

8. Rushing the final reveal

Reading the solution is the most anticipated moment. Do not rush it: gather everyone, collect the accusations, then read slowly. Take time to go over the red herrings: that is when the laughter starts.

9. Trying to make everything perfect

Decorations, themed menu, music... All of that is a bonus. A great murder mystery party is first a good story and friends who play along. A simple, relaxed evening beats an exhausted host.

The best way not to miss anything

Choose a kit that guides you step by step. The host's book of The Vernier Case and La Queimada du Pazo contains the preparation, the texts to read and the plan for each act, without ever revealing the killer.
