How many players do you need for a murder mystery party?
Published on 26 October 2026
It is the question everyone asks before buying a murder mystery game: "how many of us will there be, and will it work?". The number of players changes everything. Too few, and the investigation runs out of suspects. Too many, and some people get bored. Here is how to get it right.
The sweet spot: 6 to 12 players
For a classic murder mystery around a table, the ideal range is 6 to 12 players. Below 6, there are too few suspects for the doubt to last. Above 12, conversations scatter and it becomes hard to follow every lead.
That is why our cases are built for this range:
- The Vernier Case plays with 6 to 12 people. Six roles are essential to the story; the other six are added depending on your number of guests.
- La Queimada du Pazo has 8 characters, with variants for 6 and 7 players.
Essential roles and extra roles
A good game separates two kinds of roles. Essential roles carry the plot: the victim is linked to them, the clues concern them, the killer is one of them. Extra roles enrich the evening with new secrets and new red herrings, but the case still works without them.
That is what lets the same kit work for 6, 8 or 12 guests without the story falling apart. The host's book tells you which roles to keep for your group.
More guests? Play in pairs
When you have more guests than roles, the easiest solution is to have two people play the same character. A couple, two friends, a parent and their teenager: they share the file and the clues, and vote together at the end. It is often very funny, because both have to keep their lies straight.
With pairs, La Queimada du Pazo can host up to 16 players, and The Vernier Case can go beyond 12. We explain this in our article on large groups.
Fewer guests? Use the variants
If someone cancels at the last minute, do not panic. The variants in the host's book hand the important clues to other characters so the case can still be solved. That is how La Queimada's 6- and 7-player variants work. See also our article on murder mystery games for 6 players.
What about 4 or 5 players?
It can work with some very short games, but the experience is different: fewer suspects, less bluffing. If there are five of you, it is worth inviting one or two more people: a murder mystery party is also a great way to mix groups of friends.
In short
- Ideal: 6 to 12 players.
- More guests: play in pairs.
- A cancellation: use the variants in the host's book.
- Always choose a kit that clearly lists its essential roles.
