A murder mystery party for 6 players: how to get it right

Published on 26 October 2026

Six players around a table: it is the most common size for a first murder mystery party. Enough for several believable suspects, few enough for everyone to have time to talk. You still need a game that genuinely works with six.

Why 6 is a great number

With six, everyone takes part. Nobody hides in a corner, every lie gets noticed, and so does every silence. Conversations are easy to follow, and the host keeps the pace without effort. It is also the perfect size for a dinner: one table, one meal, one evening.

The trap to avoid: a "cut-down" game

Some games designed for 10 or 12 players fall apart with six: witnesses are missing, clues lead nowhere, and the killer is too easy to spot. Before buying, check two things:

  1. Does the kit clearly say it plays with 6?
  2. Does it tell you which roles are essential?

The Vernier Case was built around six essential roles: the case is complete with them, and the six other roles enrich the game if there are more of you. La Queimada du Pazo has eight characters, with a 6-player variant in the host's book: the clues of the two missing roles are handed to others so everything stays solvable.

Our tips for a 6-player game

  • Respect the pace of the acts. With six, people tend to rush: leave real time for questioning before handing out new evidence.
  • Use the questioning cards. They force suspects to tell the truth and restart the conversation when it slows down.
  • Mix personalities. Seat chatty players next to quieter ones: they push each other.
  • Play too. With six, the host can keep a character without the evening suffering, since the host's book never reveals the killer.

A typical 6-player evening

  1. Welcome, outfits, character introductions (30 minutes).
  2. Act I: the crime and the first questions.
  3. Act II: the first case files arrive.
  4. Act III: the revelations, then the final accusation.
  5. Reading the solution and a debrief over dessert.

Allow about three hours in total.

What if someone cancels?

With six, one absence is felt. That is why serious games include variants. For more on group size, read how many players you need for a murder mystery.
