Decorating a murder mystery party on a small budget
Published on 27 October 2026
You do not need to turn your living room into a film set. A great murder mystery party depends mostly on the story and the players. A few well-chosen touches are enough to set the mood, using what you already have at home.
1. Dim the lights
It is the most effective decoration and it costs nothing. Turn off the ceiling light, keep side lamps, add a few candles (on stable holders, away from curtains). Soft light makes everyone look more mysterious. More ideas in our article on lighting.
2. Turn the table into an investigator's desk
The kit itself is part of the decor. Put the shared case files in the middle of the table, like on a detective's desk: a map, a photo, a report. Add a notepad, a few pens, a magnifying glass if you have one. Players will keep coming back to it all evening.
3. Crime scene tape
A red and white barrier tape, stretched across the hallway or around an armchair, sets the tone immediately. You can find it in DIY shops for a few euros. For a stronger effect, mark out "the scene": the spot where the victim was last seen.
4. Match the theme of the case
- For The Vernier Case, a 50th birthday party: a few lanterns, champagne glasses, a cake. The party has just happened, and it went wrong.
- For La Queimada du Pazo, a harvest night in Galicia: candles, small clay bowls or glasses, a chilled white wine, a few bunches of grapes, a dark tablecloth.
5. Small details that intrigue
- A sealed envelope in plain sight: "Open only at the end".
- A knocked-over glass on a corner of the table.
- An empty chair with an object belonging to the victim.
These details are not part of the investigation, but they spark the first conversations.
What to avoid
- Fake blood and gory decor: our cases are stories of secrets and lies, not horror films.
- Too many objects on the table: players need room for their evidence.
- Unattended candles, especially if you make a real flaming queimada.
The budget
With candles, barrier tape and what you already own, decorating costs almost nothing. The essential part is in the kit: a real case file, ready to print. For the full preparation, read our guide to hosting a murder mystery party.
