Lights and candles: the perfect murder mystery atmosphere
Published on 27 October 2026
If you only do one thing for the atmosphere of your murder mystery party, make it this: dim the lights. Nothing turns a living room into a crime scene faster. Here is how, without anyone complaining they cannot read their clues.
The rule: dark around, bright on the table
Players need to read their files and the case evidence. So keep proper light on the investigation table (a desk lamp, a low pendant light) and leave the rest of the room in soft light.
Light sources that work
- Side lamps with warm bulbs rather than the ceiling light.
- Candles on stable holders, away from curtains and paper.
- LED candles, ideal with children, pets, or lots of documents on the table.
- String lights for a party feel at the start of the evening.
The moment in the dark
Some cases include a moment when everything goes dark. In La Queimada du Pazo, the midnight scene is played by the light of a single candle while the host reads the conxuro. When the lights come back on, the victim has collapsed. It is often the most memorable moment of the evening.
To make it work:
- Warn players not to talk during the reading.
- Keep a single light source near the host.
- Switch the lights back on all at once at the end of the text.
Safety first
- Never leave a candle unattended or near printed documents.
- If you make a real flaming queimada, do it outside or in a clear space, never in total darkness, and keep a lid within reach. The host's book reminds you: a candle in a bowl works just as well.
- Keep walkways clear: players stand up and move around a lot.
Adapting to the case
For The Vernier Case, which begins as a birthday party in the garden of a grand house, lanterns or string lights set a party mood before switching to cooler light when the investigation starts.
In short
- Warm, low light in the room.
- Light on the table for reading.
- A moment in the dark, if the case includes one.
- Candles always supervised.
