A family murder mystery party: our tips for success

Published on 27 October 2026

A family meal that drags on, cousins who only meet once a year, teenagers glued to their phones: a murder mystery party can completely transform a family gathering. Here is how to make it work.

From what age?

Our cases deal with crimes and family secrets, with no shocking scenes. We recommend them from age 14. Teenagers often love this kind of game: they are allowed to lie, accuse the adults, and win.

Why it is ideal for families

  • All generations play together: no special knowledge needed, just listening and a bit of mischief.
  • Roles flip the usual habits: grandpa becomes a suspect, the youngest cousin leads the investigation.
  • Lots of laughs: watching a parent lie with a straight face is unforgettable.

Handing out roles in a family

A few tips to avoid misunderstandings:

  1. Avoid roles too close to reality: if the story involves a divorce or a debt, do not give that role to someone going through the same thing.
  2. Mix generations in pairs if there are many of you.
  3. Give talkative roles to the confident ones, and quieter roles to those who prefer to observe.

Which case to choose?

  • La Queimada du Pazo is itself a family story: the Souto family celebrates the end of the harvest in their Galician manor. Inheritance, secrets, legends: perfect for a big table. 8 characters, up to 16 in pairs.
  • The Vernier Case takes place during a business owner's 50th birthday, surrounded by family and friends. 6 to 12 players.

Organisation

  • Keep the evening around a simple meal prepared in advance.
  • Choose a host who reads the texts from the host's book. They can play too.
  • Plan a break if the youngest or oldest get tired: the game lasts about three hours.

An idea for the holidays

A murder mystery works brilliantly during holidays, weekends in a family house or end-of-year celebrations. See also our New Year's Eve article, and our guide to organising everything.
