What music for a murder mystery party?

Published on 27 October 2026

Music is the easiest way to set the mood at a murder mystery party. Well chosen, it sets the tone as soon as the guests arrive. Badly set, it drowns the conversation and ruins the questioning. Here is how to use it well.

The principle: background, not a concert

At a murder mystery party, everything happens through talking. Music must stay in the background, at a volume where people can talk without raising their voices. Choose instrumental tracks: lyrics draw attention and blur the conversation.

Three moments, three moods

  1. Guests arriving: party music that fits the story. Players introduce themselves, raise a glass, get into character.
  2. The investigation: quieter, tenser music. Film scores, mellow jazz, piano.
  3. The final reveal: turn everything off. Silence makes the reading of the solution far more powerful.

Matching the music to the case

For [La Queimada du Pazo](/en/case/la-queimada), the host's book suggests Galician music: gaita (the Galician bagpipe) and pandeiretas (tambourines). For the midnight scene, stop the music as the lights go out: the silence is part of the ritual.

For [The Vernier Case](/en/case/l-affaire-vernier), the evening starts as a birthday party in a grand house: easy listening or jazz for the party, then a darker mood when the investigation begins.

Where to find this music

Streaming platforms offer ready-made playlists: search for "suspense film score", "noir jazz", "Galician music" or "mystery ambience". Prepare your playlist before the evening, long enough for three hours, and check there are no adverts in the middle.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Too loud: if players lean in to hear each other, turn it down.
  • Songs everyone knows: people start singing and the investigation stops.
  • Total silence throughout: a light background puts shy players at ease.

A host's tip

Use music to mark the acts. When the music changes, everyone understands something is coming: new case files, a voicemail to listen to, a revelation. It works better than asking for silence. For the voicemails, read our article on QR codes.
