Murder mystery party or escape room: which to choose?
Published on 27 October 2026
Murder mystery parties and escape rooms are often mentioned together. Both are group investigation games, but the experience is very different. Here is how to choose.
The escape room: solving together, against the clock
In an escape room, the team is locked in a room and must get out before time runs out by solving puzzles: padlocks, codes, hidden objects. Everyone plays on the same side, against the clock.
- Pros: adrenaline, sets, mechanisms.
- Cons: you have to travel, book a slot, and the price is per person. Groups are often limited to a few players.
The murder mystery party: investigating... against each other
At a murder mystery party, each player plays a character. A crime has been committed, everyone is a suspect, and only one is guilty. People question each other, lie, cross-check clues, then accuse.
- Pros: you play at home, at your own pace, around a meal. Groups can be larger. A kit can be reprinted for every private party.
- Cons: you need a host and a little preparation (about thirty minutes with a printable kit).
The real differences
| Escape room | Murder mystery party | |
|---|---|---|
| Place | A dedicated room | Your home |
| Length | Usually 1 hour | About 3 hours |
| Spirit | All together | Everyone for themselves, with secrets |
| Key skill | Logic, searching | Talking, bluffing, deduction |
| Food | Before or after | During |
Which one?
- Want a short, intense outing? Escape room.
- Want a full evening at home, with role play and laughter? Murder mystery party.
- Does your group love talking, bluffing and suspecting each other? Murder mystery party, no question.
Love both?
Our cases borrow the pleasure of real clues from escape rooms: realistic case files, voicemails to scan, maps, photos. But they keep what makes a murder mystery special: the characters, the secrets and the liar hiding among you. Discover The Vernier Case and La Queimada du Pazo.
