A murder mystery party for 12 or more players: play in pairs
Published on 26 October 2026
A birthday, a team event, a big family gathering: sometimes there are a lot of you. A murder mystery party for 12 players or more works perfectly well, as long as you plan two things: the choice of game and the layout of the room.
Pick a game built for a big group
The easiest option is to start from a case that already welcomes many players. The Vernier Case was written for 6 to 12 players: with 12, each guest has their own character, with a story, secrets and goals. It is the richest format.
Beyond that: the pairs technique
When there are more guests than roles, have two people play the same character. They get the same file, share their clues and vote together at the end. This has several advantages:
- Shy guests feel safer: nobody faces the questions alone.
- Couples have a great time: playing a husband and wife who hide things from each other is irresistible.
- The story stays intact: no roles invented at the last minute, the case stays consistent.
With pairs, La Queimada du Pazo goes from 8 characters to 16 players, and The Vernier Case can go beyond 12.
Plan the space
With twelve or more, one table is not enough for questioning. Plan:
- a central area for the host's readings and the shared evidence;
- two or three quieter corners for private conversations;
- a visible spot to display the evidence already revealed, so everyone can check it.
The host's role becomes more important
With a big group, the host has to keep the pace: announce the acts clearly, hand out the envelopes, nudge players who stay in the background. They can still play, but many hosts prefer to focus on running the game from 12 players up. The host's book contains every text to read and the evening act by act.
Our tips
- Send the invitations early if you can: with 12 people, outfits take a little organising.
- Prepare one envelope per character and per act, clearly labelled.
- Do a full round of introductions at the start so everyone knows who is who.
- Go for a buffet rather than a seated meal: players move around more easily.
- Leave time for the final reveal: with many players, the debates last longer, and they are funnier.
