Lying without getting caught: tips for murder mystery suspects

Published on 27 October 2026

At a murder mystery party, everyone has something to hide. The killer, of course, but also the innocent: a debt, an affair, an older lie. Knowing how to lie is a useful skill for every player. Here is how to do it well.

First, know the rule

Everyone may lie to protect their secrets. But only the killer may lie about the crime itself. An innocent player can hide why they were in the wrong place, but cannot invent false testimony about the murder. And when a questioning card is played on them, they must tell the truth.

1. The best lie is almost true

Do not reinvent your whole evening. Change one detail: the time, the place, who you were with. The rest of your story stays true, and you will not have to remember it.

2. Lie by omission

It is the safest weapon. You say nothing false; you just forget to mention part of it. "I was in the garden" is true... even if you were not alone.

3. One version, from start to finish

Detectives compare what you say in act I and in act III. Discreetly note what you have claimed and stick to it. Changing your story is the fastest way to get accused.

4. Answer a question with a question

"Why do you ask? Where were you at midnight?" Turning the question around buys time and puts the other player on the defensive. Use it sparingly: too often, and it becomes suspicious.

5. Have an alibi that holds

If another player can confirm part of your evening, lean on them. A shared alibi is solid. But careful: if your witness has something to hide too, they might drop you at the worst moment.

6. Time your clues

You do not have to show evidence that incriminates you. Evidence that points at someone else, on the other hand, can deflect attention. Timing matters: the right clue at the right moment can tip the whole investigation.

7. Do not overdo it

The suspect who protests too loudly draws every eye. Stay calm, a little annoyed if accused, but never panicked.

These tips also work for unmasking others: watch for people who change their story, answer with questions, or overdo it. Next, read how to question a suspect, and choose your case: The Vernier Case or La Queimada du Pazo.
